The behavior of former President Donald Trump and his supporters was so abhorrent, ABC News political analyst Matthew Dowd contended on Sunday, that it demands “accountability” akin to truth commissions in post-Hitler Germany, post-WWII Japan, after the ouster of South Africa’s white supremacist party and dealing with the Confederacy after the U.S. Civil War.

Outlining the value of an impeachment trial, Dowd asserted that “before you get to reconciliation and healing, you to have some element of truth and accountability in this.” Treating it as an equivalent time period, he maintained the aborted Reconstruction process “resulted in this country of Jim Crow laws, it resulted in this country of the KKK, and it resulted in this country of 100 years more of a fight for justice and truth and equality in our country.”
