Walmart Employees Refuse to Bake Cake For Cop's Retirement

As if the world hasn't seemed crazy enough lately, now we have to read stories about how cake can be offensive and cause some people to feel uncomfortable.

As first reported by Todd Starnes, a Walmart in McDonough, Georgia came under fire when some employees refused to make a cake for a police officer who was retiring after 25 years on the force. The cake was requested by the daughter of a cop who was retiring and wanted a nice cake made for a retirement party.

The officer’s daughter first asked for a cake with the American flag in black and white, with a thin blue line in the middle. One of the bakers, though, thought the design could be perceived as racist and refused the request. A second option was given, this time just a simple chocolate frosted cake with a blue line across it. Again, this idea was rejected, the woman recalling the baker telling her that she didn’t “feel comfortable doing this.”

Eventually, a family friend and fellow Georgia police officer took to his Facebook page to vent his frustration. When the story started to pick up traction, the Walmart’s store manager eventually was forced to reach out to the family and apologize. The manager even offered to make a new cake and gave the woman a $50 gift card.

While a seemingly nice gesture, the bakers apparently again refused to comply in making the cake, so the manager was forced to decorate it himself. The finished cake had the words “Blue Lives Matter” written on it with the thin blue line going across the cake. As you can see in the picture below, it clearly isn’t very well done at all.

To their credit, Walmart did apologize and seemingly tried to right their wrong. But it is wholly unacceptable for the bakers it employs to refuse to make a cake for a cop because they feel it is “racist” or “don’t feel comfortable” doing it. As the officer’s daughter correctly states, “If I didn’t want to deal with a customer [in her retail job] — and said ‘No’ — I would get fired.”

And that’s exactly what should happen to the bakers who didn’t want to make this cake just because their feelings were hurt.
