President Trump attributes his success at winning the presidency in large part to social media.

In a Sunday interview with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo, Trump said that he doubts he’d “be here if it weren’t” for social media platforms such as Twitter.

"I doubt I'd be here if it weren't for social media, to be honest with you,” he said. "There is a fake media out there. I get treated very unfairly by the media."

He said that Twitter especially has allowed him to say what he wants to say when he wants to say it and to fight back against claims he deems as false or unfair.

"I have a tremendous platform," the president said. “So when somebody says something about me, I’m able to go, bing, bing, bing – I take care of it. The other way I'd never be able to get the word out.”

"I have friends that say oh, don't use social media," said Trump. "When I put it out, you put it immediately on your show. The other day I put something out. Two seconds later I'm watching your show, it's up."

Trump’s tweets have dominated the news headlines ever since he took office, using social media like no other U.S. president before him.

Many have argued that they have served only to undermine his presidency.

He argues that social media is his only tool to refute “fake news” stories on his own terms, such as the NBC story that claimed he wanted a “tenfold increase” in the U.S. nuclear arsenal.

Trump called the story “pure fiction, made to demean” and threatened to challenge NBC's license.
