President Trump during a press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday doubled down on his rebuke of NBC News as “fake news” following a report by the news network that he wanted a “tenfold increase” in the U.S. nuclear arsenal.
Trump again denied the allegation, saying that he never discussed increasing the nuclear arsenal but rather modernizing it “to be in tip-top shape.”
“I never discussed increasing it. I wanted it in perfect shape,” he said. “That was just fake news by NBC, which gives a lot of fake news lately."
“Right now, we have so many nuclear weapons,” Trump continued. "I want them in perfect condition. Perfect shape. That’s the only thing I discussed.”
“It’s frankly disgusting the way the press is able to write whatever they want to write,” he fired.
The report by NBC News alleges Trump during a gathering this past summer with the nation’s highest-ranking national security leaders discussed wanting to increase the U.S. nuclear arsenal “tenfold."
The report also alleges that it was soon after the same July 20 meeting that officials heard Secretary of State Rex Tillerson say that Trump is a “moron,” a claim that both Trump and the State Department have refuted.
Trump tweeted Wednesday morning that the NBC nukes report was "pure fiction, made up to demean" and suggested that he might challenge the license of major news networks he deems as "fake news" such as NBC and CNN.
