Sen. Schumer Calls New Product 'Kool-Aid for Underage Drinking'

A new form of alcohol has just been approved for sale by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), and it’s not even a liquid. It’s in the form of a powder called Palcohol. Senator Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) is spearheading legislation attempting to ban what he calls an obviously dangerous product. In a press release regarding Palcohol, posted just yesterday, he said:

“I am in total disbelief that our federal government has approved such an obviously dangerous product, and so, Congress must take matters into its own hands and make powdered alcohol illegal. Underage alcohol abuse is a growing epidemic with tragic consequences and powdered alcohol could exacerbate this. We simply can’t sit back and wait for powdered alcohol to hit store shelves across the country, potentially causing more alcohol-related hospitalizations and God forbid, deaths. This legislation will make illegal the production and sale of this Kool-Aid for underage drinking.”

Creator Mark Phillips came up with the idea to make it easier to have a drink while enjoying the outdoors. Carrying all of the bottles and glassware needed to enjoy a drink after reaching his destination was too impractical. Palcohol was his answer to this dilemma. Palcohol comes in 4x6 inch bag that is designed to be used as an impromptu glass. Just add 5 ounces of water and you have yourself an extremely portable alcoholic beverage.

Palcohol has had opponents since its inception and Phillips recorded a video in response to better showcase his product and fight back against those that would diminish its chances of reaching the market.
