Many people who keep up with the goings on in the political realm know that a fair portion of the politicians in the U.S. government are corrupt. And while it’s one thing to accept bribes using your office and influence as collateral, it’s an entirely other thing if the people you are accepting money from are currently involved — in one way or another — in the current conflict between Israel and Palestine.

That country is Egypt, and the politician is — allegedly — Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.).

NBC News is reporting that Menendez is now also facing charges of “accepting bribes from a foreign government and acting as a foreign agent.”

According to the report:

In the indictment Thursday, federal prosecutors alleged that Menendez's wife [Nadine] and [New Jersey businessman Wael] Hana “worked to introduce Egyptian intelligence and military officials to Menendez for the purpose of establishing and solidifying a corrupt agreement.”

In this agreement, Hana, with assistance from Daibes and Uribe, “provided hundreds of thousands of dollars of bribes to Menendez and Nadine Menendez, in exchange for Menendez’s acts and breaches of duty to benefit the Government of Egypt, Hana, and others, including with respect to foreign military sales and foreign military financing," prosecutors said.

The indictment accused Menendez of acting as an unregistered "agent of foreign principle" for the government of Egypt from around January 2018 to about June 2022.

The timing of the announcement comes amid Egypt closing its border with the Gaza Strip earlier this week, essentially shutting out Palestinians attempting to flee the conflict and any Hamas terrorist who might try to do the same.

The Associated Press (AP) reported:

It was the first time the Rafah crossing was shuttered during a workday since early this year. Egyptian authorities had kept it open during the 11-day war between Israel and Hamas in May.

According to the Egyptian officials, the closure was connected to Cairo’s efforts to broker a long-term cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. It was not immediately clear how long the closure would last, the officials said.

If the possibility of a long-standing senator being a foreign asset wasn’t enough, Menendez also faces charges — levied against him last month — including “conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud and conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right.”

While some people in this country still have the right to presumed innocence before being proven guilty, the charges seem to keep piling up for the longtime politician.
