An allegedly suicidal man from Ontario, California was fatally shot while approaching local police in a threatening manner armed with a katana (Japanese sword), officials say.

The man reported himself to the police, saying that he wanted to die and that he had a gun. He told them that he was waiting in a vehicle within the area around the intersection of Mission Boulevard and Mountain Avenue.

Officers arrived at the location to find the vehicle stopped with its lights off. When police attempted to pull him over the driver took off in a reckless manner, while the lights were still off.

After about five minutes, the pursuit ended with the driver abruptly stopping the vehicle and exiting it. He was holding the sword as he moved toward the officers, who then ordered him to stop, the Police Department said.

The officers attempted to fire a non-lethal rubber round, but the hit had no effect. He continued his advance, despite all of the warnings, and was inevitably shot.

The man was given medical aid at the scene until he could be transported to a hospital where he was subsequently declared dead. No officers were harmed during the incident.
