Last Surviving 9/11 Rescue Dog Celebrates 16th Birthday in NY

Bretagne served as a search and rescue dog at Ground Zero and, to honor her service during the events of 9/11, New York City is throwing her an awesome party to give her her best day ever for her Sweet 16.

Bretagne (pronounced “Brittany”) is originally from Texas but when the call came, she and her handler Denise Corliss were on the first plane to New York to aid rescue efforts at the ruin of the World Trade Center. Corliss remembers being stunned when she witnessed the scope of the destruction, and she remembers Bretagne at her side stoic in the face of tragedy and eager to help. She is believed to be the last surviving 9/11 rescue dog.

Bretagne started her best day ever at the 1 Hotel Central Park where she received a hero’s welcome and was regarded as the hotel’s first “Pup of Honor.” The heroic hound was taken to the suite the hotel had prepared for her and it was immediately apparent that the party had begun.

She lounged about on soft beds, played with a host of new toys and snacked on fine dog treats while she lapped up all of the affection that came her way. She was also chauffeured around the city in a beautiful vintage taxi, played like an exuberant pup at a dog water park, and would don a party hat and wolf down on a dog friendly cake.

Check out BarkBox’s video that they made to mark Bretagne’s Sweet 16 party and help us thank this amazing dog for her part in saving the lives that were endangered as we remember the evil we all suffered 14 years ago.
