Off With His Head! Columbus Statue Found Beheaded In New York

Whatever your stance on the personal character of Christopher Columbus, I think any sane person would agree this attacking of inanimate objects has gotten way out of hand.

Apparently, someone thought it would be a good idea to decapitate a statue of Columbus at Columbus Park in Yonkers, N.Y. The statue was found to have been beheaded early Wednesday.

“It’s very upsetting that American values have sunken to the level they are today,” Yonkers resident Pat Gamberdella said. “It’s unfortunate because I did go up there and I did see it all smashed.”

According to NBC 4 - New York:

The head to the bronze-colored statue was found discarded next to a plastic bag in Columbus Memorial Park, a mile north of the Bronx.

Yonkers police are investigating the incident and they say it could have been the work of juveniles overnight. They also say there is a possibility it could be fallout from the deadly protests and counter-protests over a Confederate statue in Charlottesville, Virginia earlier this month.

Gamberdella was right in his assessment that American values have taken a tumble in recent years. People seem to have a general distaste for history, particularly since the government took over the job of thinking for everyone. Common sense and logic would dictate that the removal or vandalization of history, in the general sense, would doom the populace to repeat it.

“We can’t just desecrate a monument to them just because you don’t like what they did,” Gamberdella said.

If desecrating monuments or statues were the solution, what about the Great Pyramids in Egypt or the statue of Soviet Communist ruler Vladimir Lenin in Manhattan? Should society erase those? What about the Dachau and Auschwitz concentration camps? People are still allowed to visit those as a reminder of the past.

It likely won’t happen in places like New York City, because radical liberals like socialist New York Mayor Bill de Blasio only recognize monuments and statues of those people that fit their agenda.

“There’s a statue of Vladimir Lenin? That’s news to me. First, I in all my days here in New York City, I have never heard of there being a statue of Vladimir Lenin on the lower east side,” Mayor de Blasio recently told The Daily Caller at a press conference. “It may be true. I’ve literally never heard of that in my life. Anyone heard of that before? That’s a new one.”

Whatever the case may be, and whatever anyone’s stance is on a specific issue, one thing we should all agree to is that vandalizing and/or destructing public monuments and statues is against the law, and the perpetrators should be punished accordingly.

It’s time to re-learn some respect for things that don’t belong to the people doing the damage.
