Five months after Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, a naturalized U.S. citizen, went on a rampage at a military recruiting center in Chattanooga, Tennessee killing four Marines and one Sailor, the FBI announced that it was a terror attack.

FBI director James Comey stated that the “killer was inspired by a foreign terror organization.” Comey also stated that the Chattanooga shooting has always been investigated as a terror attack. However, during the last five months since the shooting, law enforcement have been reluctant to label this an act of terror.

Since this shooing has now been designed terrorism, the Secretary of the Navy announced that the victims of this shooing would be receiving the Purple Heart.

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus stated, “Although the Purple Heart can never possibly replace this brave Sailor and these brave Marines, it is my hope that their families and the entire Department of the Navy team continue to mourn their loss, these awards provide some small measure of solace…Their heroism and service to this nation will be remembered always.”
