Dr. Ben Carson: 'The Heart of the Matter Is Not Guns' - It's the 'Soul of the People'

Dr. Ben Carson appeared on Thursday's Kelly File to talk about the tone President Obama took in response to the mass shooting in Charleston, South Carolina. The President spoke in the White House early Thursday and said, among other things, that Americans needs to "reckon with the fact that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries"

Megyn Kelly asked Dr. Carson if this was the appropriate message with the appropriate tone at the appropriate time - Carson said it was not, and that the president failed to targeting the true heart of the matter: "the soul of the people."

"Certainly not the tone that I would have adopted," Carson stated. "I think we have to start going to the heart of the matter. The heart of the matter is not guns. The heart of the matter is the heart, the heart and soul of people."

He argued that suspect Dylann Roof didn't turn into a "maniac" overnight. He said that Americans need to focus on instilling the right kind of values in our kids rather than sacrificing those same values for the sake of "political correctness."

With all of the external threats to the nation, Carson hopes that America can overcome the rhetorical "wars" and stop giving license to hate and division among its people.

"I hope we the American people can come to the understanding that we are not each other's enemies," Carson stated. "The enemies are those who are stoking the flames of division trying to divide us in every category and weakening us as a society."
