A Detroit police commissioner resigned in disgrace Thursday after being discovered by police in his car with a prostitute and asking the officers to “help him out.”

Bryan Ferguson, the District 1 representative for the Detroit Police Board of Commissioners, announced his resignation Thursday after news of the incident broke Wednesday. He had previously said he would be stepping back from board meetings indefinitely.

Ferguson was allegedly discovered in his car at around 7:15 a.m. Wednesday morning with a known sex worker’s head in his lap. According to Police Capt. Jason Bates, Ferguson immediately got out of the car and told the officers that he was a police commissioner, asking if they could “help him out."

“A title or position doesn’t make them above the law,” Bates said.

Ferguson denied the allegations as a “big misunderstanding,” though he acknowledged that he was found in his car with a prostitute. He told the Detroit Free Press that a woman he did not know got into his truck and he was trying to kick her out when deputies pulled up. In a press release on Thursday, Ferugson indicated that he would not be attending board meetings for a time.

“The allegation is untrue and the situation is a big misunderstanding,” Ferguson said in a press release. “I do not want this personal matter to become a distraction from the important oversight work this Board has to do. For that reason, I am making the decision to step back from the Board meetings for a time.”

Later that day, Ferguson announced his resignation, and called it an “honor and privilege” to have been a police commissioner.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the residents of Detroit in police oversight. After further consideration of the best interests of my family and the board, I am choosing to resign as District 1 Police Commissioner effective immediately,” Ferguson said in a media release. “Again, I admonish the Board and the public to remain focused on the important work of oversight, transparency and accountability.”

Ferguson received a ticket for indecent or obscene conduct involving a sex act with a prostitute.
