State Issue 1, an Ohio ballot initiative that would have raised the margin needed to pass ballot measures from 50 percent to 60 percent, was soundly defeated in Ohio on Tuesday.

The ballot initiative was defeated by a fourteen percent margin, with 43 percent of voters voting in favor of the initiative while 57 percent voted against it. Over three million Ohioans turned out to cast their ballots.

The looming elephant in the room which prompted such significant turnout was the future ballot initiative concerning abortion regulations in the state. In November, Ohioans will vote on a ballot initiative that would codify abortion as a “right” in the Ohio state constitution if the initiative passes. With the rejection of State Issue 1, the prospect of such a ‘right’ being codified has now become much more tangible.

In a profound demonstration of the sacrosanct nature of abortion to the American left, State Issue 1 prompted massive turnout and organization. According to Fox News, 533,000 people voted early or by mail in the time between the beginning of early voting on July 11 and August 2, two times the quantity cast during Ohio’s midterm primary elections.

Bearing these results in mind, it seems clear that the killing of unborn children remains almost sacramental to the Democratic Party, and that the prospect of constitutionally enshrined abortion in Ohio is now a very real possibility. Ohio Republicans would do well to bear these takeaways in mind as they organize opposition to the November abortion ballot initiative.
