8th-Grader Suspended for Buying Kool-Aid Mixture at School

An Akron, Ohio charter school suspended an eighth-grader Iverson Sibley, 14, for five days because she bought a mixture of Kool-Aid powder and sugar from a fellow student. School officials caught the petty transaction on camera and thought it was a middle school drug deal.

According to WPTV, students at Akros Middle School call the mix “happy crack.” They consumed the mix by dipping their fingers into the mix and licking it off; it’s basically homemade Fun Dip. The slang the students picked for the treat may be ill-advised, but Sibley’s mother feels the punishment far outweighed the crime.

“We want to encourage our kids to go to school, to better themselves. This is petty,” said mother Erika Yarborough. “She’s out of school for five days, not getting an education, because she had some sugar in her pocket.”

“She broke a rule Yes, discipline her. But this is extreme.”

WPTV was told that several other students have been suspended in similar incidents.

Yarborough has since withdrawn Sibley from the charter school and has once again enrolled her into the public school system.
