On Monday, former NFL player Rashard Mendenhall tweeted out a racist-infused opinion about white players in the NFL. On Tuesday, J.J. Watt offered two perfect responses to the post.
The former Houston Texans defensive end originally responded with some humor to Mendenhall’s tweet. In this hypothetical scenario, Watt pointed out that “Team White” would have some issue finding enough players to fill the secondary/defensive back positions. He raises a fair point. In the last 20 years, there’s been one white player to get significant playing time at cornerback.
As such, Watt said that this would be a major problem for the white team, since “Team Black” has Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
We’d get cooked at corner, not gonna lie.

Nobody on our squad is covering Tyreek 😂 https://t.co/CLCugkM4LS
When I first saw this, I chuckled. Watt’s response could not have been better. Was Mendenhall’s tweet overtly racist and highly unnecessary? Absolutely. But on the flip side, I’ve had so much fun coming up with an "All-White" dream team roster and just joking about this topic with friends and family.
However, one user tried to make it seem like Watt didn’t care about the racist nature of Mendenhall’s post.
“Ignoring the blatant racism. God forbid a white guy stands up for himself,” the user said.
This prompted Watt’s second exceptional response. He replied to this user by saying he was choosing to put a positive spin on Mendenhall’s words, and avoided playing along with his race-baiting game.
Buddy, listen…

We don’t need to be offended by everything in the entire world.
He said white guys can’t play football.
I thought to myself “I’m a white guy. I’m very good at football” and concluded that his statement had no validity.
Instead of arguing, I had some fun.
End. https://t.co/EcqWh2Xf6x
This, folks, is a textbook example of how to respond to an idiot.
Watt could have easily flexed his Hall-of-Fame caliber resume and used that as an effective counter to the argument. Instead, he made light of it all and gave football fans (like me) the hilarious challenge of finding white defensive backs in the league.
File this as one of the reasons why Watt should be enshrined in Canton some day.
