President Biden’s handling of Afghanistan is a success, Matthew Dowd contended on CNN’s Reliable Sources on Sunday where he also lamented how it has taken attention away from “the assault on own democracy.” Dowd, the former chief political analyst for ABC News, complained to host Brian Stelter “the press has a tendency to judge things by anecdotes,” but “data for the last week shows Joe Biden has basically gotten 30,000 people out of Afghanistan without a single loss of an American life.”

In contrast, Dowd said “five thousand people...died of COVID” and “five hundred people died of gun violence in the last week in this country” while “not a single American has died in the pullout.” He fretted about misplaced media priorities: “There’s far worse crisis situations, including the assault on our democracy, that get forgotten about in the midst of this.”
