Spanish Nets Try to Smash Border Patrol, Fail of Their Own Volition

PATRICIA JANIOT, NOTICIAS TELEMUNDO: Arrest and deport those crossing the border, that's the Border Patrol´s strategy, according to its acting chief Mark Morgan. The official claims that 95% of migrants entering the United States do so illegally. This, thanks to the immigration policies of the Trump administration.

NICOLE SUAREZ, UN NUEVO DIA, TELEMUNDO: The strong presence of the Border Patrol is forcing groups of immigrants to take more dangerous routes

KARLA MARTINEZ, DESPIERTA AMERICA, UNIVISION: And well, as we well know, most immigrants dream of leaving their countries and they cross the border and they do it illegally. Here's how the Border Patrol reacts.

JORGE MIRAMONTES, AL ROJO VIVO, TELEMUNDO: Five persons were lost and suffering from the cold when they decided to call the emergency number 911 for help

The border patrol air unit responded to the emergency call

FABIAN CARBAJAL, BORDER PATROL AGENT: We found two men of Mexican nationality who commented that they were coming illegally across the border

We're going to send some agents today, as soon as possible

DULCE CASTELLANOS: Some activists say that the tightening of immigration laws has pushed immigrants to look for other ways to cross. Many times the places are more isolated and dangerous.

BP AGENT: This is a smugglers route

CASTELLANOS: But in this interview, a Border Patrol officer tells us that this is a route for smugglers who go through treacherous areas

FRANCISCO CUEVAS: The Border Patrol says it can gain access to commercially available information if it is relevant to its border security mission. Recently, that information served to detect a drug tunnel on the Mexico-Arizona border. The Civil Liberties Union says that what the federal government is doing is unacceptable, and that they will exhaust all legal remedies to force them to disclose the information they are receiving from these private companies and how they are using it.

ILIA CALDERON: Faced with growing obstacles to obtaining asylum in the United States, many immigrant family members are sending their young children alone across the border for them to try.

PEDRO ULTRERAS: Parents have learned that if children enter alone, immigration releases them to family members in the United States

This is the part of the Rio Bravo where several of these children have crossed. The Border Patrol, for its part, told us that they have not seen a significant increase in unaccompanied minors and emphasize that it is very dangerous for parents to send them in that way.
