David Maraniss, a former Washington Post reporter who has written a new book about his communist parents, recalled on C-SPAN how the Republican Congressman who questioned his father in 1952, later wrote a book, Days of Shame, denouncing the McCarthy era. Maraniss then wondered: “Will a Republican ten years from now write a book like that?”

Maraniss’ snide take on President Trump came during an interview on Q & A, in the next to last edition of the show which C-SPAN founder Brian Lamb, who has announced his retirement, will host. Maraniss rose to fame by writing the definitive biography of Bill Clinton, First in His Class. He later wrote Barack Obama: The Story and co-authored Tell Newt to Shut Up.

His latest book, A Good American Family: The Red Scare and My Father. During the interview with Lamb, he recalled how at a 1952 hearing of the House Un-American Activities Committee, Congressman Charles Potter of Michigan questioned his father. Potter, a Republican, became a U.S. Senator and later wrote the book critical of Joe McCarthy.
