CBS: Boycott Won’t Work Against Target’s ‘Inclusive’ Transgender Policy

<p>On Wednesday&rsquo;s <em>CBS This Morning</em>, while co-host Gayle King noted that &ldquo;a petition against the retail giant Target is gaining a lot of momentum&rdquo; over the company&rsquo;s transgender bathroom policy, financial contributor Mellody Hobson dismissed the protest: <strong>&ldquo;You know, it&#39;s very hard for these kind of boycotts to work.</strong> We haven&#39;t seen real success since the civil rights era in the 1960s.&rdquo;<br />

Fellow co-host Norah O&rsquo;Donnell wondered: &ldquo;What are the risks and rewards for companies when they take a stance on a social issue?&rdquo; Hobson only saw risk for businesses taking &ldquo;exclusive&rdquo; stands &ldquo;on the wrong side of history&rdquo;: &ldquo;Well, <strong>certainly history does show being inclusive is more successful than being exclusive. The big risk is you take a stand, and you&#39;re on the wrong side of history.</strong> That you get it wrong, and that damages your brand.&rdquo;</p>
