During his opening monologue Friday night, Real Time host Bill Maher followed the lead of the media and blamed President Trump for the mass shooting in El Paso, arguing that "the shooter in El Paso did it because all the things that Trump says all the time, he took to be true, like Mexico is invading us, that kind of shit." Maher pointed out that "in his manifesto, he wanted everybody to know that he wasn't getting this from Donald Trump." According to Maher, "he was getting it from Lou Dobbs, same as Trump." Maher reiterated the point that the shooter "wants you to know" his actions had "nothing to do with Trump" before claiming that "in the manifesto, Trump does get a 'story by' credit.'" Maher also weighed in on Fox News host Tucker Carlson's claim that "white nationalism is a hoax," citing the fact that "he never met one" as evidence. Maher took issue with that claim, saying "Oh come on, Tucker, yes you have." At this point, a picture of Carlson interviewing President Trump appeared on-screen, the implication was that President Trump is a white nationalist.
