To discredit Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), who is blocking President Biden’s massive social spending bill, the panel on ABC’s This Week resurrected Ronald Reagan’s “trope “ of “welfare queens” and attacked Manchin for advancing the interests of “plutocrats.” Citing how Manchin said recipients might misuse tax credits, Averi Harper, deputy political director for ABC News, charged that brings back “the myth of the welfare queen, that Reagan era trope used to argue against entitlements, implying that the poorest among us are inherently irresponsible.”
ABC News veteran Terry Moran soon noted that Manchin “does represent one of the poorest states in the union,” yet, Moran charged, “he seems to represent the plutocrats a lot.”
