On Reliable Sources Sunday, host Brian Stelter asked Irin Carmon of New York Magazine about the "media backstory" to Joe Biden's flip-flop on abortion. According to Carmon, "there has been ground level activism and online activism that has increasingly gotten the ears of mainstream media criticizing the Hyde Amendment." Perhaps unintentionally, Carmon admitted: "mainstream media now is more aware that there's an internal debate among progressives about whether things like the Hyde Amendment throw low-income women under the bus...That pipeline has gotten shorter and shorter between progressive ideas and mainstream journalists." Stelter jumped in and argued that NBC News asking Biden about his changing position on the Hyde Amendment "is helping shift the party" and Carmon agreed, "Absolutely, it's shifting the party to the left."
