On Monday, the network morning shows were simultaneously giddy with excitement over FBI director James Comey “clearing” Hillary Clinton by closing the bureau’s investigation into her email scandal while also being fearful over the “political damage” that had been done to the Democratic nominee in the final days of the campaign.
Co-host Matt Lauer opened NBC’s Today by proclaiming: “The FBI giving Clinton a last-minute boost concluding their e-mail search saying there's nothing on Anthony Weiner's laptop to warrant action.” In a report that followed minutes later, correspondent Andrea Mitchell cheered: “The 2016 campaign now again turned upside down by FBI director James Comey....her aides elated, seen reading the director's letter on iPads.”
