Discussing a summit on democracy set for next year at the White House, to which Russia and China have been excluded while Taiwan and Ukraine have been invited, a top Financial Times editor questioned “whether America is in the position today to really play host and to pick and choose.” Why: “A lot of countries, including the United States, are now defined as less democratic than they used to be. As the term of art goes, ‘democratic backsliding.’”
