CNN’s Fareed Zakaria opened his Sunday CNN show by expressing how “I have to confess I find Joe Biden’s unpopularity puzzling.” He contended “Biden is a genial, likable person. Many of the policies he’s pursued have been popular, even some with Republican support. The country is doing reasonably well economically...”
Zakaria ran through explanations for Biden’s lack of support, such as how he’s nether a “charismatic outsider” like Kennedy and Obama, nor a southerner “who manage to bridge the divide between north and south.” He acknowledged how “the timing of his biggest slide in popularity, summer of 2021, coincided with the withdrawal from Afghanistan, the rise of Delta and onset of inflation” and noted “violent crime was up nationwide in 2020.”
But without mentioning Biden’s age-related difficulties or disastrous Biden policies, such as an uncontrolled border and his quest for massive new spending, Zakaria concluded Biden “has mostly handled his job with intelligence and decency” and so is a victim of circumstances beyond his control: “Presidents often get rewarded for being around in good times, whether they caused them or not. In Joe Biden’s case, he has mostly handled his job with intelligence and decency, but he’s paying the price for the complicated times that we are living through.
