Zimbabwe's Defense Minister: 'God is Punishing' Western Countries Who Placed Sanctions on Us with Virus

Talk about sour grapes. The defense minister of Zimbabwe made some comments recently that make her seem pretty ignorant and completely devoid of the humanity, all because her own country couldn’t get it together enough to avoid sanctions.

Oppah Muchinguri, the defense minister of Zimbabwe referenced above, spoke a rally in Chinhoyi where she openly mocked “Western nations” who are dealing with the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, that had previously imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe.

“This coronavirus that has come are sanctions against the countries that have imposed sanctions on us,” Muchinguri said, according to the Associated Press (AP). “God is punishing them now and they are staying indoors now while their economy is screaming like what they did to ours by imposing sanctions on us.”

The defense minister wasn’t done there. Muchinguri had to get a shot in at President Donald Trump, because apparently she ascribes to the “orange man bad” narrative that is so popular among most of the media outlets in previously said Western nations.

“Trump should know that he is not God. They must face the consequences of coronavirus so that they also feel the pain,” Muchinguri also said.

What a small, petty person.

Anyone want to know why Western nations placed sanctions on Zimbabwe in the first place? The AP reported that the sanctions were put in place against Zimbabwe over the last two decades, because of “alleged human rights abuses.”

However, the AP also noted that the U.S. is still one of Zimbabwe’s biggest donors, pointing out that the U.S. — among other countries — “routinely helping the troubled southern African country fight widespread hunger, cholera and other afflictions by providing food aid and medicines to millions of people.”

“How does she face her Chinese counterparts, where the pandemic began when she makes such insulting and insensitive statements?” asked Alex Magaisa, a government critic and law lecturer at the University of Kent in the U.K.

Exactly.

Even Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa had to adjust a statement he released on Monday that didn’t mention the defense minister by name, but did try to downplay her sentiments.

“Pandemics of this kind have a scientific explanation and know no boundary, and like any other natural phenomenon cannot be blamed on anyone,” Mnangagwa said.

Ignorant statements, like the one Muchinguri made, don’t make countries who have sanctions placed on your country want to remove them anytime soon. Heck, maybe the U.S. won’t pay the bill for Zimbabwe’s government to actually take care of its people anymore. You know, what their government should’ve been doing on their own.
