Fine. Sure. Pull your Hollywood project from production Texas because you hate pro-life laws. But don’t call yourself righteous when you take in revenue from China, a country that puts Uighurs in concentration camps.

That’s our message to The Wire creator David Simon after he made a self-aggrandizing tweet about pulling his future HBO series off the lot in Texas in the wake of the state’s heartbeat law. Especially considering that Simon also writes and produces for HBO, a WarnerMedia (formerly Time Warner) company. And guess which Asian country with a billion people, and Muslim concentration camps, makes media deals with WarnerMedia?

To quote a certain orange president: “CHYYYYY- NAH!”

Simon's initial “look at me save the world with my opinion” tweet came on Monday, September 20. The foul-mouthed, hothead, whose angry posts clearly make him seem like he’s docile to women (yeah, sure) shared an article which berated tech and media giant Apple for doing business in Texas despite the state’s offensive protections of innocent human life.

The saintly Simon assured his fans that he could never in good conscience do what Apple was doing. He captioned his retweet of the article, saying, “I’m turning in scripts next month on an HBO non-fiction miniseries based on events in Texas, but I can’t and won’t ask female cast/crew to forgo civil liberties to film there. What else looks like Dallas/Ft. Worth?”

Simon isn’t the first Hollywood man to threaten to go after pro-life states. J.J. Abrams did the same over Georgia’s own heartbeat bill from 2019. And like Abrams, whose Disney Star Wars films were marketed heavily in communist China, Simon is a hypocrite.

As we stated, HBO’s parent company WarnerMedia does serious business in China, a nation which persecutes Muslim minority communities. Though “persecutes” is probably too tame a term. China participates in what the U.S. government has recognized as genocide against Uighur Muslims.

Mmmhmm, so Simon’s paycheck is derived in part thanks to the same communist regime that is committing genocide. But, please, let’s let him talk about how he cares about women’s rights. Oh, that’s funny. You know which women have no rights, Mr. Simon? Uighur women.

In a since-deleted tweet, someone called Simon out for this hypocrisy. He offered a callous and braindead response, tweeting, “I don’t work for Apple, but for Time Warner, which no doubt has a variety of soulless corporate moments we could use to shout ‘squirrel’ and avoid attending to the insane overreach in Texas.”

Oh, so Simon’s admitting that he’s aware of WarnerMedia’s “soulless corporate moments” like Uighur genocide, but that he doesn’t care enough about that to take a stand against it. He just calls that issue a distraction from the real issue of eroding abortion. Oh, sure.

It’s clear that Simon is just doing what’s politically expedient for him. Though, maybe he’s not a hypocrite, actually. Maybe he likes genocide. He sure wants it to keep happening in Texas via abortion, so why not let it slide in China?
