What A Mother! Days After Passing ‘Gender-Neutral’ Language Rules Pelosi Declares Herself 'A Mother’

A little over a week since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) helped to pass orders on the use of gender-neutral language in the House rules - she declared herself “a wife, a mother, a grandmother.”

On Wednesday, Pelosi stood before House members and said, “I stand before you as a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a daughter, a daughter whose father proudly served in this Congress, Thomas D'Alesandro Jr. from Maryland, one of the first Italian Americans to serve in the Congress.”

On January 4th Pelosi helped pass a new set of rules for the 117th Congress.

Among the rules is a measure requiring Congress to “honor all gender identities by changing pronouns and familial relationships in the House rules to be gender neutral.”

Under clause 8(c)(3) of rule XXIII, gendered terms, such as ‘father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, first cousin, nephew, niece, husband, wife, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, stepfather, stepmother, stepson, stepdaughter, stepbrother, stepsister, half brother, half sister, grandson, or granddaughter” will be removed.

To be clear, the rules package does not prevent the use of gendered language by lawmakers on the floor, but renames certain “official” language written in the rules of the House.

Also as a rule, it’s official that Pelosi often says things that many people, of various genders, would never want to read in written form.
