‘We Will Have Accountability’: Pelosi Calls for 'Unity' After Dems Take House, Takes Jabs at Trump, GOP

Now presumably House Majority Speaker Nancy Pelosi in a speech at an election watching party in Washington on Tuesday touted the midterm election results after it was projected that the Democrats would seize control of the House from the Republicans.

While she called for “unity” and said that Americans "have all had enough of division,” she took the opportunity to insert a few jabs at President Trump and the Republican Party.

“Tomorrow will be a new day in America,” Pelosi declared. "Today is more than about Democrats and Republicans, it's about restoring the Constitution's checks and balances to the Trump administration."

“In stark contrast to the GOP Congress, the Democratic Congress will be lead with transparency and openness,” she continued, “so that the public can see what’s happening and how it affects them and that they can weigh in with the members of Congress and with the President of the United States.”

“We will have accountability and we will strive for bipartisanship,” she added, noting that the Democrats will try to find common ground “where we can.”

"A Democratic Congress will work for solutions that bring us together because we have all had enough of division," said Pelosi. “The American people want peace. They want results.”

Republicans maintained control of the Senate while the Democrats gained control of the House, the first time in eight years.

House Democrats are now likely to launch investigations into President Trump and his administration, particularly Trump's tax returns, and move to counter his executive actions on immigration.

There have been calls by Democrats to impeach Trump, though without warrant. Pelosi on Tuesday said that she would not support moving to impeach President Trump if the Democrats gain control of the House. She said that “it would have to be bipartisan, and the evidence would have to be so conclusive,” yet in her remarks at the election-watching party, she used words like “transparency” and “accountability” when talking about Trump.

She did hinge her position on “what happens in the [special counsel Robert] Mueller investigation.”
