Vanity is one of the seven deadly sins, but don’t tell that to someone just trying to take the best possible “selfie” they can so that a few people can give it a like on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Snapchat.
Two women — one of whom is old enough to know better — were both visiting the Trevi Fountain in Rome, Italy on Wednesday evening at the same time. Both women wanted to take a selfie in the same spot in front of the fountain at the same time. Neither woman would back down from wanting that specific spot and so, of course, general idiocy ensued.
One of the women is 19-year-old from the Netherlands and the other is a 44-year-old Italian-American. Both of them need to grow up, but the 44-year-old needs a life lobotomy. At least the 19-year-old has the excuse of naivety because of her age.
According to The Guardian:
Eight people ended up becoming involved in the fight in front of startled onlookers.
Two police officers managed to quell the fight, but the truce lasted only a few minutes, and two more officers had to be called in to finally end it.
The tourists only sustained bruises but were charged over violence.
Four police officers to break up an eight-person fight over a selfie dispute. I’m sorry, but every one of the people who participated in that fight should have their decent human being card taken away from them.
The Trevi Fountain is 256-years-old — and I have to say from experience, it’s absolutely breathtaking. For two people to fight over wanting to take a picture in the same spot at the same time while ignoring the beauty that was behind them is borderline criminal.
At the end of the day, no one cares how many followers you have on social media. It’s a vain practice that too many people have allowed to take over their lives.
Put the phones down, folks! At least put them down for a minute in order to enjoy majestic sights with your own eyes, instead of through a viewfinder.
