The Virginia Senate Judiciary Committee voted Monday to push back House Bill 961, also known as the assault weapons ban, to the 2021 session. In addition to moving the bill from this year’s session, it was also voted that a letter be sent to the crime commission to study it.

Democratic advocates have pushed for the bill, but Republicans, along with some moderate Democrats, said they need longer to look at it. According to a report from ABC 8News, Democratic Senator Creigh Deeds of Roanoke proposed pushing the bill to next year to allow the crime commission to look at the definition of an assault weapon.

The bill passed 51-48 in the House of Delegates earlier this month.

The Virginia House of Delegates measure would ban the sale of popular weapons like the AR-15 and magazines that hold more than 12 rounds.
