The U.S. Surgeon General is alerting the American public the following:

“STOP BUYING MASKS!”

U.S. Surgeon General Jerome M. Adams tweeted over the weekend a series of tips regarding the coronavirus outbreak in the U.S., including how masks “are NOT effective in preventing general public from catching” the virus.

He added that by purchasing these masks, the American public is in turn putting at risk healthcare professionals who are treating patients with the virus.

“They are NOT effective in preventing general public from catching #Coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can’t get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and our communities at risk!” Adams wrote.

No doubt a consequence of the media uproar over the virus, there were reports of Americans over the weekend stocking up on supplies at stores such as Costco and Walmart.

Other tips that Adams shared via Twitter to prevent the spread of the virus include getting a flu shot, washing hands regularly, and staying home when sick.

“[F]ewer #flu patients means more resources for any potential #COVID19 cases!” he wrote.

Adams advised that the public can help the spread of the virus “by knowing the signs and symptoms: fever, cough, shortness of breath.”

He urged anyone with those symptoms to contact their healthcare providers.
