The United Kingdom is lobbying the United Nations to change the language in a treaty from “pregnant women” to “pregnant people,” since the use of the word “women” is allegedly offensive to transgender men.

According to the Sunday Times, the UK government’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office asked the UN not to use the phrase “pregnant woman” in the International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights. The treaty current prevents pregnant women from being given the death penalty, although this move by the UK would make it also include pregnant “men.”

Instead of using “pregnant woman” (or “pregnant women”), the UK is asking the government to use “pregnant people,” as the currently language would “exclude transgender people who have given birth.”

For those who are confused, this would cover a biological woman with XX chromosomes who “transitioned” to become a man. This could involve taking testosterone, a mastectomy, or just general appearance changes.

In the United Kingdom, there have been two cases of “pregnant men,” AKA women who have become pregnant after “becoming” men.

Despite Prime Minister Theresa May’s latest move to allow trans people to change their gender without medical notice, a representative recently said, “Of course pregnant women is an acceptable term.”
