While most Americans celebrated American independence on the Fourth of July, some took to celebrating the eldest daughter of former President Barack Obama, Malia Obama.

According to Twitter, Malia’s birthday, which happens to coincidentally be on the Fourth of July, is being used as a “substitute” for celebrating America’s independence because Independence Day occurred when “when not everyone in the US was truly free.”

The idea for “Malia Obama Day” apparently originated gained traction with a tweet with Chance the Rapper, although he did not explain the reason for declaring the Fourth of July “Malia Obama Day.”

Other Twitter users, however, filled in the context with viral tweets. One Twitter user wrote the purpose of “Malia Obama Day” was to “replace this terrible hypocritical holiday with the birth of our first daughter, Malia Obama”:

Another proclaimed, as a black woman, “Independence Day doesn't count for us anyway”:

Yet another Twitter user claimed that, “Until this country treats people of color the same, it's national bbq & Malia Obama day”:

A cake was even made to mark the day:

Media outlets quickly jumped on the internet bandwagon, with Teen Vogue posting their salute to “[m]alia [o]bama day!”

BET also announced its observance of “Malia Obama Day”:

Affinity Magazine, a social justice magazine for teenagers, claimed the holiday is “[s]omething worth celebrating today!”

In their assessment of “Malia Obama Day,” the Huffington Post wrote “The Fourth of July has some holiday competition” before praising Malia for her fashion sense—which is somehow on the level of America declaring independence.

Nylon Magazine asserted Malia's birthday "overshadowed" the Fourth of July":
