President Trump on Tuesday took to Twitter to slam Democrats as “the party of Open Borders, Drugs and Crime” after a failed attempt in the House to override his veto regarding his border national emergency declaration.

“Thank you to the House Republicans for sticking together and the BIG WIN today on the Border,” Trump wrote. “Today’s vote simply reaffirms Congressional Democrats are the party of Open Borders, Drugs and Crime!”

The House voted 248-181 in favor of overturning the President’s veto, 38 votes shy of the needed two-thirds majority for the measure to proceed.

According to the Associated Press, “Just 14 Republicans joined all voting Democrats in Tuesday’s futile effort to void Trump’s declaration of a national emergency at the Southwest border.”

“By invoking that power, Trump has said he will shift $3.6 billion from military construction to erecting barriers along that boundary,” writes AP.

It has been reported that an additional $1 billion would be used for the construction of the border wall, to be pulled from Department of Defense funds allocated for planned projects, a request which a House committee denied on Tuesday.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Tex.) issued a joint statement following the vote on Tuesday that they intend to “continue to review all options” to fight President Trump’s national emergency declaration.

“In six months, the Congress will have another opportunity to put a stop to this President’s wrongdoing," the statement reads.
