President Trump during his visit to California this week held a rally at U.S. Marine base MCAS Miramar in San Diego on Tuesday.
Speaking to a hanger full of servicemen and women, Trump praised the U.S. Marines, saying that his administration is “stacked” with them because they are “the kind of people you want on your side.”
He said that they “never give up, never give in, never retreat and never surrender,” and that they are “always faithful" to their country.
“Your courage fills our enemies with dread and your example inspires countless Americans who dream of being the best to one day wear the uniform of the United States Marine,” said Trump.
He went on to promise Marines and the rest of the U.S. armed forces who “for too long” have “been asked to do more with less” that in 2019, they will receive “the largest pay raise in over a decade.”
“We’re also investing in our greatest weapon of all … you. In 2019, we want to give you the largest pay raise in over a decade,” said President Trump. “You deserve it.”
Trump touted achieving a $700 billion budget for defense spending in 2018 and said that his administration plans to ask for $716 billion in 2019.
He called his administration’s efforts the “largest military buildup since Ronald Reagan.”
Trump made his appearance at the base after visiting the eight prototypes for his proposed border wall.
He said that the wall is necessary “for lots of reasons,” including preventing drugs and crime from flowing over the border and into the U.S.
“We need it for lots of reasons. We have to have it,” said Trump.
The Department of Homeland Security has requested $18 billion in funding over the next 10 years to construct the wall.
Earlier Tuesday he called on Congress “to deliver a budget that protects our homeland and properly funds all of our law enforcement needs.”
