If you thought the 2016 election cycle couldn’t get any more bizarre, you were wrong.

GOP frontrunner Donald Trump decided to double down on this year’s election insanity by attacking Ted Cruz’s father, Rafael Cruz, implying that he may have been complicit in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

No. This is not a story from “The Onion.”

Trump slammed Cruz’s father on Tuesday after Rafael Cruz called on Christians to support his son in the Indiana primary.

In a video clip broadcast on Fox News, Raphael Cruz invoked Jesus in an effort to bolster support for his son.

“I implore, I exhort every member of the body of Christ to vote according to the word of God and vote for the candidate that stands on the word of God and on the Constitution of the United States of America,” Rafael Cruz said in the video clip.

Trump took issue with this statement, saying that Cruz evoking God was “a disgrace.”

But Trump didn’t stop there. He went on to link Rafael Cruz to one of the most infamous murderers in American history, Lee Harvey Oswald.

"His father was with Lee Harvey Oswald prior to Oswald being shot, I mean, the whole thing is ridiculous," Trump said. "Nobody even brings it up, they don't even talk about that. What was he doing with Lee Harvey Oswald shortly before the shooting?”

The statement was in reference to a photo that appeared last month in the National Enquirer (the tabloid newspaper that has become a primary source for the Trump campaign’s attacks on the Texas senator) which they claim shows Rafael Cruz standing next to Oswald and handing out leaflets extolling the virtues of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.

When examined by The Warren Commission following the assassination of President Kennedy, experts could not identify the man in the photo who the Enquirer claims to be Rafael Cruz.

The Cruz campaign has called the allegations “garbage.”
