President Donald Trump on Tuesday defended his nominee to the Supreme Court Brett Kavanaugh amid an FBI investigation into allegations of sexual assault against the judge.

Trump told reporters on the South Lawn before leaving the White House for Philadelphia that he believes Kavanaugh “did very well” and fought “very hard for his reputation, for his family” during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last week, where Kavanaugh vehemently defended himself and denied the allegations against him.

He said that it is a “very scary time for young men in America,” explaining that during this #MeToo era, men are considered “guilty until proven innocent” – not the other way around.

"It is a very scary time for young men in America, when you can be guilty of something you may not be guilty of," said Trump.

“My whole life I’ve heard, ‘you’re innocent until proven guilty,’ but now you’re guilty until proven innocent,” the president continued. "It's a very scary situation where you're guilty until proven innocent. That is a very, very difficult standard."

He said that he hopes for a “positive” vote on Kavanaugh, but erred on the side of caution, adding, “A lot is going to depend on what comes back from the FBI.”

When asked if he had a message for young women, Trump replied, "Women are doing great."

President Trump is already facing backlash for his remarks.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday said that there would be a vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination this week.

He also said that the Senate would be receiving the FBI’s report “soon.”
