Without any forewarning, President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un wrapped up their summit in Vietnam earlier than scheduled Thursday.
The news came rather abruptly as there were plans for a working lunch between the two leaders Thursday afternoon and a signing ceremony thereafter.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement, "No agreement was reached at this time, but their respective teams look forward to meeting in the future."
Trump held a press conference soon after the news broke, saying that while he had a “really productive time” speaking with Kim regarding plans to denuclearize, they would not be able to reach a deal that day.
“Sometimes you have to walk,” he said. “This was just one of those times.”
Trump was scheduled to hold a press conference at 4 a.m. Eastern time but moved up the event to 2 a.m.
A few hours prior, Trump said that they would "ultimately have a deal," but that "doesn’t mean we’re doing it in one day, in one meeting."
Kim during an unprecedented question-and-answer session with reporters reaffirmed his commitment to "complete denuclearization," saying, "If I'm not willing to do that, I won't be here right now."
