A little less than six out of 10 Floridians polled in a recent University of North Florida survey said that they at least “somewhat oppose” illegal aliens obtaining a driver’s license. While the percentage of people who oppose the move is in the majority, it’s actually a little bewildering how low that majority seems to be.
The UNF poll that was conducted recently claims to have surveyed 243 “Democratic Voters,” 234 “Republican Voters,” and 186 “NPA Voters” (No Party Affiliation). The differences in the voting percentages shouldn’t be all that surprising.
For Democrats, 61 percent either strongly or somewhat support "unauthorized immigrants" being allowed to obtain driver’s licenses, while 87 percent of Republicans said that they either strongly or somewhat oppose the same measure. The NPA voters surveyed indicated that they slightly more opposed than supportive of an illegal alien being allowed to procure a license, with 50 percent voting in the opposition camp and 42 percent saying that they’re supportive of the move.
When you take into account all the votes combined, only 59 percent of respondents voted in opposition to the license question.
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), 13 states and the District of Columbia already offer driver’s licenses to “unauthorized immigrants.”
A 14th state, Oregon, passed legislation in 2019 that “eliminates requirement that person provide proof of legal presence before Department of Transportation issues noncommercial driver license, noncommercial driver permit or identification card.”
Oregon’s law goes into effect on January 1, 2021.
