Ten Mexicans are suing Walmart after eight Mexicans were among those killed in a shooting at one of the chain’s stores in El Paso, Texas.
The lawsuit accuses Walmart of “not taking reasonable and necessary measures to protect its customers” after a gunman shot and killed 22 people, eight of them Mexican citizens, in what he told reportedly police was an assault specifically targeting Mexicans. Eight more Mexicans were among those wounded in the attack.
The suit was filed in Texas state court in El Paso County via the the Law Office of Lynn Coyle, an El Paso-based firm, in coordination with the Mexican consulate general, according to Reuters.
The news agency added that, “It was not clear from the ministry’s statement what relation the Mexican plaintiffs have to the attack, though the ministry noted that Coyle works with victims of the shooting.”
The report said that while the Mexican Foreign Ministry announced the lawsuit, it didn’t lay out the legal grounds for which the plaintiffs will try to hold Walmart accountable for the attack.
This is the second lawsuit in recent days seeking to hold someone - or something - responsible for a mass shooting other than the gunman himself. The Supreme Court earlier this month cleared the way for a lawsuit filed by several families of victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting against Remington Arms, which manufactured the rifle used by Adam Lanza to attack the Connecticut elementary school.
