Teens Beat, Choke Off-Duty Police Officer At a San Francisco Mall on Black Friday

A group of teens violently assaulted an off-duty police officer on Black Friday, punching and choking him unconscious after he came to the aid of a woman who said the teens had stolen her cell phone.

According to the Sacramento Bee, surveillance video from the Bay Street Mall shows a woman approaching a group of teenage boys, later telling reporters she believed the group had taken her phone. Several of the young men can be seen in the video shoving the woman, who walks off for a moment then returns to stand near the group, clearly upset and confused as to what to do.

After a few minutes, the off-duty California Highway Patrol officer in plain clothes is seen approaching the woman. The two speak briefly before the officer lifts his phone, appearing to take pictures of the teenagers.

Moments later, one of the teens breaks free from his friends and rushes the officer, punching him repeatedly in the head. Several other teens jump in and chase the officer briefly out of range of the camera. Mall security rushed to the scene and were able to apprehend a couple of the teens, but not before the mob was able to punch, kick and strangle the officer.

“He was punched. He was kicked. He was taken to the ground. He was choked. He lost consciousness for a minute, came back, was able to defend himself,” said detective Jaime Pardo, according to KPIX.

The officer reportedly drove himself to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.

A 14-year-old and a 16-year-old have been arrested in connection with the assault. The Sacramento Bee says police are still looking for six other teens involved in the attack.
