St. Louis Offers Groceries For Guns, Doesn’t Expect Crooks To Participate

St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson has announced a gun buyback program - turn in your guns, and in exchange, receive grocery store gift certificates.

According to the mayor, guns are being used “to settle differences, defend territory, retaliate, take cars, do holdups – and as everyone knows carjackings are up from prior years.”

So, the city is hopeful that this groceries for guns program will bring down crime, even though officials don’t expect the criminals to turn in their guns.

“I don't expect the criminals and the crooks to come in here and bring me a gun. I do expect however that the good people will tell us where the guns are,” St. Louis Public Safety Director Jimmie Edwards said at a press conference on the program last week.

“My message is simple, mom, grandma, uncle, dad – give us the guns,” he said. “Because that same gun that is in your house may be a weapon used to hurt someone very badly.”

Or the gun could be used to defend yourself against the armed criminals whom nobody expects to participate in the program.
