SOTU Gives the Left the Opportunity to Embarrass Themselves...Again

Oh what a difference a year makes. Actually, one of the only differences from last year to this year seems to be the level of hatred from the left towards President Donald Trump. As for the rest of it, nothing much has changed. Sure, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is now Speaker of the House, but she hasn’t changed her standoffish attitude towards getting anything done during the Trump administration’s tenure.

As most of you have probably heard by now, Pelosi sent a letter to Trump on Wednesday with a suggestion to postpone the State of the Union address until the government has reopened. In typical Pelosi fashion, the same foot that she normally puts in her mouth whenever she speaks must have travelled to her pen, because the letter really did her no favors.

“And since the start of modern budgeting in Fiscal Year 1977, a State of the Union address has never been delivered during a government shutdown,” Pelosi wrote.

Technically, Pelosi is right. However, the problem with her assertion is that there has never been an opportunity since 1976 for a State of the Union address to be postponed or cancelled by a government shutdown. The State of the Union typically occurs in late January or early February, and the government hasn’t been shutdown during any of those dates.

Not only does Pelosi’s State of the Union/government shutdown assertion not pan out, but the last paragraph of her letter made Trump’s case that the U.S. needs heightened national security for him.

“Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week,” Pelosi wrote, “I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress.”

So we only need security to protect the politicians but not the American people? Got it. Thanks, Nancy!

As for the left’s attitude during this year’s State of the Union season, their negative attitude towards hearing anything Trump has to say isn’t much different from their attitude before and during the president’s 2018 address.

There were at least a dozen Democratic members of Congress that didn’t even attend the 2018 State of the Union, because they simply couldn’t handle listening to Trump speak.

“Why would I take my time to go and sit and listen to a liar?” Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) said to MSNBC in January 2018.

To realize the level of pettiness the left carried out during last year’s State of the Union, you need look no further than their petulant faces.

Just take a look at these mugs:

She must've had broccoli in her teeth.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) sitting there trying to find his neck.

Don't worry about former congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.). He thought he got free tickets to "Hamilton" and all he got was a Trump speech.

SourPuss4

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) sits there wondering why Black Lives Matter didn't interrupt Trump.

In January 2018, Stephen Dinan reported the following concerning the left’s behavior during Trump’s address:

Most Democratic lawmakers, dressed in black, refused to stand to greet President Trump for his first State of the Union address Tuesday night, setting the tone for one of the most divisive receptions for a president in modern history.

Many sour-faced Democrats also declined to stand and applaud first lady Melania Trump, who countered their black outfits with a bright white pantsuit.

Heck, the Left’s performance at last year’s SOTU was so childish and immature that even the Washington Post published an article about how embarrassing their display was during Trump address.

“Democrats groaned, scoffed, heckled and made lemon-biting faces. Others simply boycotted,” columnist Dana Milbank wrote on January 31, 2018. “In short, they did the same sort of things they (and I) denounced Republican lawmakers for when they did them to President Barack Obama.”

So what new about this year’s State of the Union? If the address goes on as planned, you’re going to see more of the left boycott, you’ll see more scrunched up faces, and a heightened disrespect for the man that sits in the highest office in the world.
