Sore Loser: Egyptian Refuses to Shake Hands After Losing to Israeli at 2019 World Judo Championships

Is it that Middle Eastern countries don’t like Israel, or is it that Muslims simply don’t like Jewish people? Either way, it’s been a world issue for decades with no resolution in sight in the near future. Even in the world of international sports, one side seems to not be able to put aside their differences and display any level of sportsmanship.

The 2019 World Judo Championships in Tokyo, Japan wrapped up on Wednesday, and for the first time ever, an Israeli judoka won the gold medal. Sagi Muki placed first in the 81 kg division, which translates in 178.5 pounds.

The 27-year-old Muki defeated all six opponents he faced, including Egypt’s Mohamed Abdelaal in the quarterfinals. Abdelaal was the only one of Muki’s opponents to not engage in the Judo world’s customary post-match handshake, instead choosing to briefly nod and walk away.

According to the Jerusalem Post, Abdelaal wouldn’t have been the only one to disrespect Muki, Israel, Jewish people and his sport by not shaking hands with the winner.

Iranian judoka Saeid Mollaei would’ve reportedly chosen not to show for the medal ceremony, where he would’ve had to stand next to Muki, had Mollaei won his bronze medal match.

All disrespect aside, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu heaped congratulations onto Muki for his victory and for representing Israel.

“You’ve proven what I always say, that thanks to talented wonderful people such as yourself we turned Israel into a judo powerhouse,” Netanyahu told Muki before inviting the athlete to visit him at his office.
