Sen. Hawley Likens Abortion to Slavery During Judiciary Hearing

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) likened the pro-life battle to that of ending the “moral evil of slavery” this week during a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing.

The Wednesday hearing concerned the Women’s Health Protection Act, progressive abortion bill which would “create a statutory right for health care providers to provide abortion care,” according to the Equal Access to Abortion, Everywhere campaign.

In opposition to the legislation, abortion survivor Melissa Ohden testified for the pro-life cause using her own experience being born alive at 31 weeks after a botched abortion, reported The Daily Caller. Because of her miraculous abortion survival, Ohden also created The Abortion Survivors Network as a resource for others like her, where the organization seeks “a world where every human being is seen as more than a choice.”

Hawley applauded Ohden’s advocacy, drawing the comparison to the strides that abolitionists made to end slavery.

“You think about the abolitionists who, for decades and decades and decades, fought against the moral evil of slavery, fought it when it was the majority position of the country, fought it when they were told that they were crazy, fought it because they knew, they knew, there was a moral truth that every person is created equal and has equal rights,” said Hawley, according to The Daily Caller.

“That’s what you’re fighting for,” Hawley continued. “That’s what pro-lifers are fighting for, is that great moral principle.”

Since the 1973 landmark Supreme Court case that created a right to kill an unborn child pre-viability, Roe v. Wade, an estimated 62 million unborn children have been victims of the moral evil of abortion, according to Fox News.

Conservatives are hopeful that the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case that the Supreme Court agreed to hear last month will place more restrictions on abortion—or even overturn Roe entirely.

Hawley echoed this pro-life hope: “I look forward to the day when we look back and say how could abortion have ever been allowed in this country.”
