Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) said Monday that Democrats were offered on Friday the “same basic offer” as the compromise that ended the three-day old government shutdown.

He said that the shutdown could have been avoided altogether and called on Democrats to explain why it was at all necessary.

"If the first rule of holes is quit digging, I guess they found a way to quit digging today," said Gardner.

He said that the Senate on Monday “went back to that same deal that was rejected Friday night.”

Gardner went on to say that he understands why Americans believe things need to change in the Senate because such “behavior is preventing people from solving what people actually agree should be solved.”

The Senate voted 81-18 to break a Democratic filibuster and end the government shutdown on Monday.

The lawmakers reached a bipartisan deal on a short-term spending package that would keep the government running through February 8.

The deal was reached on the condition that Republicans promise to find a solution for the illegal immigrants enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Republicans slammed Democrats for the “Schumer Shutdown,” saying that there was a stalemate because Democrats wanted to tie the temporary spending bill to protections for “Dreamers.”

Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) himself when he announced Monday’s deal, have dubbed it the “Trump Shutdown,” blaming the President for the failure for compromise.
