At the MTV Video Music Awards, which is reportedly a music video awards show, a descendant of Robert E. Lee stood on stage and denounced “America’s original sin” of racism.
Rev. Robert Wright Lee IV, the great-great-great-great nephew of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, told the audience at the awards show, “We have made my ancestor an idol of white supremacy, racism, and hate. As a pastor, it is my moral duty to speak out against racism, America’s original sin.”
“Today, I call on all us with privilege and power to answer God’s call to confront racism and white supremacy head on,” he continued. “We can find inspiration in the Black Lives Matter movement, the women who marched in the Women’s March in January, and especially Heather Heyer, who died fighting for her beliefs in Charlottesville.”
Lee ended his speech about the dangers of racism by introducing Susan Bro, Heyer’s mother. Along with introducing a foundation in Heyer’s name, Bro also announced the “Best Fight Against the System” award. All of the nominees won the award — since everyone gets a trophy — for their videos against violence, body-shaming, “targeting” immigrants, “government exploitation,” and for promoting “diversity.”
