If there is any validity to California Rep. Jackie Speier’s claim, then Hollywood isn’t the only place with a “secret” slush fund for sexual abusers.
The Democratic congresswoman claimed to MSNBC’s “Meet the Press Daily” host Chuck Todd that the U.S. House of Representatives has paid out $15 million in taxpayer dollars to victims of sexual harassment by members of Congress.
“We do know there is about $15 million that has been paid out by the House on behalf of harassers in the last 10 to 15 years,” Speier told Todd.
“I think [taxpayers] do have the right to know,” Speier said. “But right now, under the system, you don’t have a right to know.”
The biggest concern of all this is that the people that set up the system -- members of Congress -- are the same ones possibly using taxpayer money to cover up their transgressions in order to keep the current system they enjoy and the people in the dark.
But perhaps even more concerning are Washington politicians' faux outrage at Hollywood's rampant sexual assault problem while having allegedly ignored the same exact problem in their own backyard for years.
It’s like finding out that there was gambling going on in Casablanca," Todd said. "The environment on Capitol Hill, particularly when I was younger in the ’90s and the ’00s. It was sort of well-known that that environment existed."
So who are the evil people then? Those that would use their position of power to victimize women, sure -- ut also those who knew and said nothing. Doesn't that make you an accomplice?
Washington D.C. and Hollywood have been, and are now publicly becoming, the worst of our “anything goes” society.
If the swamp ever does get truly drained, we might want to drain it with bleach so as not to contract anything communicable.
