After Rep. Conyers Steps Aside, Pelosi Delivers Conflicting Remarks

1.1k views

Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) stepped down as Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee on Sunday after the public found out about him spending taxpayer dollars to allegedly cover up a sexual harassment and wrongful termination claim by an ex-staffer. He has not resigned from office.

Conyers has since acknowledged the money paid to the staffer and agreed to an ethics investigation into the matter, but insisted that the $27,000 payout amounted to a mere severance package and nothing more.

In a statement released on Sunday, Conyers reiterated that he denied the claims of several of his ex-employees that accused him of sexual harassment.

“After careful consideration and in light of the attention drawn by recent allegations made against me, I have notified the Democratic leader of my request to step aside as Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee during the investigation of these matters," he said.

Well, the Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) responded critically to Conyers’ decision to step down, saying that “zero tolerance means consequences” in a Sunday morning tweet.

However, her words fell on deaf ears for some, considering they came very shortly after she praised Conyers for his past efforts to promote women on MSNBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Host Chuck Todd took Pelosi to task by playing a clip of her past comments on sexual misconduct allegations and then asking the veteran lawmaker if she believed that Conyers should step down given the new allegations. Pelosi seemed to stumble around the questions and at one time commended Conyers as an “icon in our country.”
